Dunes Course

Par 72 and 5713 metres

The Dunes course at Hardelot is fast becoming one of the top courses in Northern France. The fast greens and manicured fairways make Les Dunes a must for any holiday golfer that is visiting Le Touquet and the Pas de Calais area.

The fabulous clubhouse balcony offers spectacular views to the 18th Green and the 1st fairway. The menu is superb and I do recommend that you spend a couple of hours dining and relaxing on the balcony watching all the other golfers ‘shiver’ over their Tee Shots at the 1st.

Course Review

Hole 1 is a Par 4 at 298 (Metres) from the White Tees and S.I.15

This is a tough opening hole and made tougher by the audience that is watching from the clubhouse balcony. Aim straight and right to have the best approach to the green. There is a small entrance to the green, which is guarded by deep bunkers and is very tricky as it’s the newest green on the course undulating in several different ways. The green is bigger at the back so pray they put the pin there.

Hole 2 is a Par 3 at 146 (Metres) from the White Tees and S.I.13

This is a new hole, the course changed slightly in 2002, and it’s very scenic. The bunker at the left of the green is very dangerous if the pin is placed close to it. The elevated tee should help you stop the ball so try and be accurate at this Par 3.

Hole 3 is a Par 5 at 434 (Metres) from the White Tees and S.I.13
The first Par 5 is very reachable in two! Your drive over a hill, that if you reach you will roll down a further 50-60 yards. There is a tree on the left that may block your second shot. Mind the bunkers just right of the green. It’s a good scoring hole and even I made a birdie.

Hole 4 is a Par 4 at 330 (Metres) from the White Tees and S.I.7
Aim your tee shot to the left of the hillside bunker. Your ball should then feed on down towards the hole which is tucked away on the right. There is another hillside bunker just right of the green and a long scary bunker on the left side of this flat, regular green.

Hole 5 is a Par 4 at 329(Metres) from the White Tees and S.I.3
Aim just to the right of the tree on the fairway. Or if you are a long hitter cut the corner over the two bunkers on the right. The green is elevated and very tricky as it contains three tiers and any flag position will leave a lethal putt.

Hole 6 is a Par 3 at 122 (Metres) from the White Tees and S.I.17
This Par 3 is probably the best candidate for the ‘Nearest the Pin’ at Les Dunes. A high elevator tee has your scaring down the pin! Don’t go short left as there is a bunker that will destroy ant chances of a par.

Hole 7 is a Par 5 at 464 (Metres) from the White Tees and S.I.9
Now it’s ‘Longest drive’! This long straight and narrow Par five needs an accurate drive as its tree lined on the left and there is a series of ‘pot’ bunkers on the right capturing anything loose there. Big bunkers at the green make the approach shot a little tricky as well.

Hole 8 is a Par 4 at 391 (Metres) from the White Tees and S.I.1
Stroke index one is a tough hole. Your tee shot, aimed over the small bunker, is probably NOT a driver as the fairway turns to the right and you may drive into the trees. So an Iron off the tee will leave you a second shot of over 200 yards. It’s a narrow entrance to a narrow green that gets wider at its rear.

Hole 9 is a Par 4 at 320 (Metres) from the White Tees and S.I.5
Although this is a short Par 4 it is all up hill and plays a lot longer. There is a narrow fairway and if you wander of it you will be in trouble. There is another big bunker at the green that needs to be avoided.

Hole 10 is a Par 3 at 152 (Metres) from the White Tees and S.I.14
This Par 3 is a beautiful hole! The yellow and white tees are elevated and the tee shot needs to be carried over the lake. From the tee you cannot see the whole of the green and a pin placement on the right will make this a very difficult hole.

Hole 11 is a Par 4 at 383 (Metres) from the White Tees and S.I.2
This is a very tight hole that probably needs an iron off the tee and just left of the bunker on the fairway will be fine. You will be then left with a blind approach shot over the corner of the dunes. Two dangerous bunkers at the green make this hole a worthy stroke index 2.

Hole 12 is a Par 4 at 369 (Metres) from the White Tees and S.I.6
A vicious dog leg left and the fairway is wide. Aim for the right side and then you will have a site of the green. The Kidney shaped green has some big bunkers that blend in with large dunes that surround this arena.

Hole 13 is a Par 4 at 269(Metres) from the White Tees and S.I.18
Les Dunes shortest Par 4 is probably the strangest hole on the course. The green is hidden over on the right hand side. If you can slice the ball over the bunkers on the right then that will be perfect.

Hole 14 is a Par 5 at 457 (Metres) from the White Tees and S.I.12
This double dogleg hole first goes up hill then comes down hill. Keep to the left of the fairway all along this hole. This is the smallest green on the course and a lofty approach is the only shot into the green.

Hole 15 is a Par 4 at 335 (Metres) from the White Tees and S.I.16
Another up and down hill hole that finds an odd shaped green surrounded by pine trees. Keep it straight here and make a birdie.

Hole 16 is a Par 3 at 166 (Metres) from the White Tees and S.I.4
The last par 3 on Les Dunes has a long thin green that is maybe elevated 30 metres higher than the tee. Pick a club and then take two more clubs than the one you have chosen.

Hole 17 is a Par 4 at 313 (Metres) from the White Tees and S.I.10

Are you feeling tired yet! Another hole that is all up hill and will drain your energy. Don’t hook the tee shot as the left side is all OOB. Again the green is elevated and a hard target.

Hole 18 is a Par 5 at 435 (Metres) from the White Tees and S.I.8
This is another very good eagle chance as it’s all downhill on the way home. Careful on the second shot as the lake you so admired in the clubhouse balcony sneaks into play. The green is tricky to reach and lies in a shady hollow surrounded by tall pine trees.
