Golf International Barriere, La Baule, Southern Brittany, France
Golf International Barriere, La Baule is one of the biggest golf resorts
in France with 45 holes. It is owned by the Lucien Barriere Group and
boasts three courses and a four star hotel. Golf in Brittany would not
be complete without a visit to La Baule.
There are also extensive practice facilities and a top class golf academy.
The Hotel and Golf club both boast superb restaurants and each have there
own swimming pool.
The three courses are as follows:-
Diane Barriere-Desseigne (Blue Course) Par 72 and 6301 metres
Lucien Barriere (Red Course) Par 72 and 6055 metres
Francois Andre (Green Course) Par 36 and 2961 metres
Course Review for Diane Barriere-Desseigne (Blue Course)
Hole 1 is a Par 3 at 154 (Metres) from the White Tees
and S.I.17
La Baule starts unusually with a Par 3. The green is shrouded by trees
but there is nothing too difficult here just avoid the bunkers front and
right.
Hole 2 is a Par 5 at 493 (Metres) from the White Tees
and S.I.7
The first Par 5 at La Baule is nice and straight. There is a bunker hidden
under the trees to the right. More bunkers either side of the fairway
on your second shot. It’s a small round green but don’t hook
your approach shot as there is a small pond hugging the left side of the
green.
Hole 3 is a Par 4 at 353 (Metres) from the White Tees
and S.I.5
A tight accurate drive is needed on this hole. There is a dry pond to
the right and two bunkers to the left that make the gap on the fairway
extremely small. Big bunker left of the green that should be avoided.
Hole 4 is a Par 3 at 167 (Metres) from the White Tees
and S.I.15
There is a lake to negotiate straight in front of you and once over just
avoid the bunkers either side of the green and make an easy par.
Hole 5 is a Par 4 at 404 (Metres) from the White Tees
and S.I.3
You now cross a road and La Baule opens up a bit. Gone are the tree lined
fairways and in come fairways that are more difficult. Several mounds
are evident on the right side and bunkers to the left. The green sits
up on the right side and is protected by a wrap around bunker. For any
stray approach shorts there are some nasty pot bunkers just short of the
green and a lake to the left.
Hole 6 is a Par 4 at 342 (Metres) from the White Tees
and S.I.9
There is a huge lake in front of the tee and from the white tees it is
quite frightening. Once over the lake there is a series of bunkers to
the left and a lake to the right.
Hole 7 is a Par 4 at 414 (Metres) from the White Tees
and S.I.1
Stroke index one at La Baule has an uphill tee shot and you do not see
the green on your second either. It’s all OOB along the right side
and you will find, eventually, three bunkers in the middle of the fairway.
It’s a small green surrounded by small hollows that act like bunkers.
Hole 8 is a Par 3 at 164 (Metres) from the White Tees
and S.I.13
Again there are lots of hollows everywhere and the green is protected
by three bunkers on the left side.
Hole 9 is a Par 5 at 453 (Metres) from the White Tees
and S.I.11
There are no fewer that eight bunkers here to collect your errant drive
and you will not see them all at the tee. The hole dog legs right and
the green is also protected by eight bunkers and if you avoid them all
then you should make par.
Hole 10 is a Par 5 at 506 (Metres) from the White Tees
and S.I.4
Possible La Baule best hole and the longest Par 5 on the course. The hole
dog legs around the side of the lake and only the brave will take on the
green in two. Take the line of the row of trees on the left and you will
then have an easy approach (3rd shot) to an undulating green that is protected
by a bunker sandwiched by the side of the lake.
Hole 11 is a Par 3 at 198 (Metres) from the White Tees
and S.I.14
You tee shot will need to cross the side of the lake that has just troubled
you so and the only other danger is the bunker directly by the lake on
the right.
Hole 12 is a Par 5 at 501 (Metres) from the White Tees
and S.I.2
The third Par 3 in three holes. Lots of bunkers here again. You line should
be, what appears to be, a mound! However this hides a huge bunker so lay
up short for your approach shot. Stay right side of this long green as
there is a lake left that may trouble you if you stray that way.
Hole 13 is a Par 4 at 373 (Metres) from the White Tees
and S.I.10
A Par 4 at last! You line should be the big oak tree on the right but
don’t block out your second shot. There are three bunkers on the
fairway and one small and one large bunker guard the green.
Hole 14 is a Par 4 at 324 (Metres) from the White Tees
and S.I.16
Back across the road for some tree lined fairways now. A fairly short
Par 4 with one bunker on the right of the fairway and two bunkers guarding
the narrow approach to the green.
Hole 15 is a Par 5 at 457 (Metres) from the White Tees
and S.I.12
A long narrow Par 5 that has bunkers along the fairway for any stray drives.
There are two dangerous bunkers at the green that may stop you making
par.
Hole 16 is a Par 4 at 409 (Metres) from the White Tees
and S.I.6
A long Par 4 that has a big bunker to negotiate on the fairway. As it’s
a dog leg left aim to the right of the fairway but on your approach shot
keep left as there is a lake on the right that may annoy you. Three bunkers
at this green.
Hole 17 is a Par 3 at 172 (Metres) from the White Tees
and S.I.18
The last Par 3 at La Baule is not too difficult as long as you hit the
green and don’t fall in the big bunker in front of the green. In
this trap and you will not make par.
Hole 18 is a Par 4 at 417 (Metres) from the White Tees
and S.I.8
The last hole at La Baule appears to be mundane as your drive over the
hill. However, when you reach your drive and as long as its straight you
will then notice the green sits up on the right side over a big lake.
Your second shot is then very interesting and only the brave will make
it across.
Now your Golf in Brittany is finished take some time out to visit the
Clubhouse and its restaurant, as the food is wonderful and the beer ice
cold.
Golf in France would be a look weaker without this Golf Resort at La
Baule.
