Chantaco is one of the most celebrated courses on the Basque coast thanks to its delightful charm, atmosphere and sporting tradition, all nurtured by the Lacoste family.

Unfotunately the lack of length, and driving range infringing on the 16th hole have kept it from being ranked as one of the greats. However gladly the sifting of the driving range and the changing of the two holes on the back nine have put this course in a step in the right direction.

Although rather hilly, the most tiring thing about Chantaco golf course is not the walking but trying to avoid the traps. It gives the impression of a quiet day's golfing, but even the most ambitious golfer will find it more than a handful.

Often tight with a few formidably sloping fairways and small greens, the course demands precision more than length off the tee. The original architect was Harry Colt, but with the variety of styles around the course, we suspect his design might have been altered here and there, perhaps less so on the front 9, which are of a higher standard than the rest of the course.
